Movember is a charity that aims to break the stigma around men's health, raising awareness and providing support for mental health, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Our station Manager Jack Bostock said: “Movember is important to me because each and every one of us have been either directly or indirectly affected by one of the issues that Movember supports. It is such an important cause and if it opens up even just one conversation, then we might have done something right.”

Now let's take a look at how we managed to raise all that money !

Our Mo Growers!

The Movember charity describes a mustache as being a symbol of healthy, flourishing mental health for men. It is their tradition to encourage those taking part in Movember to shave off their facial hair at the start of the month and grow out only their mustache throughout the month of November. So of course…… we obliged. The four male members of our Moore committee - Jack Bostock, Tom Prattem, Rayhan Bengougou and Josh Weston took on the challenge on the 1st of November and let's just say the results were a mixed bag!

Moore Than a Marathon

After weeks of planning and promoting, it was finally time for our ‘Moore than a Marathon’ event on Friday 21st of November. We teamed up with our good friends and fellow student radio station Shock Radio, from Salford University to take part in a joint fundraiser walking 34 miles all the way from Shock’s studio in Salford to our studio in the Student life building here in Liverpool!

3 presenters from each station completed the walk, those participators were:

  • Moore student radio: Jack Bostock, Harley Picken, Josh Weston
  • Shock Radio: Josh Bingham, Benny Fiddemore, Dan Wright.

The boys kicked off the day in Salford anticipating what they might have in store for them on Shock Radio's Friday Breakfast show. They then started the walk with ease, flying to their first checkpoints with ease and a smile on their face. Meanwhile back in the studio at Liverpool, we were getting into our live broadcast, with different presenters each hour hosting themed shows, featuring live updates from our noble walkers. We even had  some visitors from shock to host our drive time show !

It was during the drivetime show when the updates we were receiving form the walkers sounded less upbeat, they had got past half way , just past saint helens but they were certainly struggling. Morale was low, Jack had a leg injury, but the boys endured the barriers and continued walking - one step at a time. It was 5pm, the walkers had been told to listen into the broadcast as a special surprise  awaited them- a charity single !!! Presenters at both shock radio and Moore had collaborated on a comical rendition of a proclaimers classic, changing the words to “I would walk 33 miles”. The song definitely cheered up the walkers!

A few hours went by and it was around 11pm that the boys arrived. In the studio there had been some technical errors that meant Moore student radio had come off air - nightmare! Between the shock members and our team- we managed to get the show back up and running just on time by broadcasting through Shock Radio on a live phone call - a student radio collaboration at its finest!

Despite the late time a large crowd had gathered in the student life building to welcome the boys and congratulate them on their incredible achievement. They arrived linked in arms, limping up the stairs to a chorus of cheers and applause, confetti cannons were set off, and the scenes that followed were emotional.

Harley (one of the walkers) said: “When I crossed the finish line it was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had, I almost felt drunk on happiness because at some points that finish line felt like it was never going to come. Seeing everyone there for us at the end was surreal as well, I was speechless at the amount of people who came and that I actually completed it.”

Jack added: “It was honestly the best feeling in the world. We were all in so much pain collectively and at the last stop we really didn't know if we would finish it as a six. But we all did, as a team, arm in arm and blisters in blisters. It was ecstatic, the feeling of elation and joy finishing was just epic.”

Certainly a very special day that we will all remember here at Moore student radio, a day that raised over £2000 for a great charity.

Mega Mo Midnight Game Show

Possibly our best piece of social media content ever! Of course created by our fantastic communications officer  Darcy Davies. Presented by Jack and Josh the moore student radio crew surprised Tom Pratten as he was peacefully sleeping at his girlfriend's house this was the result……..

Mega Mo Fundraiser

The Mega Mo fundraiser was a night of chaos filled with Bingo, Pub quizzes, karaoke and even some leg waxing! The evening at the - and brought our GRand total to over £3000! You can read more about what went down here

WOW! That was a lot- an incredible month here at Moore student radio. Jack said: “Considering last year we raised £836 and we thought that was good, this year is just bringing the icing on top of the cake, to raise three grand, or the plaster on top of the blister! I always had 3k in mind but didnt really say it to anyone. That was my aim and the fact that we managed it was just epic."
