Presentation Basics
Presentation Basics
NOTE: These guidelines should be followed by ALL at Moore Student Radio
These guidelines are to assist you in presenting your shows. They have been put together by Industry professionals and should be of benefit to you.
Should you want to book any One-to-One training, then please reach out to any member of the Exec team.
- The Golden Rule in Radio is that you speak to one person. Radio is personal. It is not "Hey Guys" or "How are we all doing". It is direct "I hope you are enjoying this new song from Charli XCX as much as I am...." #BRAT
- A Radio Presenter is the 'Talent' of the radio station. The 'Personality' or 'Selling Point' of the station.
- A Presenter is a voice of authority. Needs to be a trusted voice. Connects the audience to the world. Builds a relationship with the listener. Is entertaining/engaging. Some presenter have an impact on the listeners life.
- What am I listening to? "....You're listening to the Moore Breakfast Show....."
- Who am I listening to? - ".....with Spongebob Squarepants....."
- What time is it? ".....its five past 8 on your Monday morning...."

- Learn to 'Back Time' - Especially if you have a show after your own. This is when you say your goodbye's before the final song so the next team can come in and prepare.
- You want the listener to come back to listen again and again, and to remember what you say. Get the listener to say - "I do that too! or Oh that's new to me". Tell stories.
- Be authentic - don't try to put on an act. BE YOU! Don't try to be someone that you're not.
- You are in charge (or the producer is...) Guide the listener. Don't confuse the listener. Keep the listener wanting more all the time.
- THINK - One Thought, One Link. Don't 'bang on' for too long! Tell the story like you would tell it to a friend.
- Content ideas: features/phone in/comedy skits/pre recorded clips/facts/trivia/interviews. What's on at JMSU this week? What is going on in the news? What can you do with it? Taylor Swift says she can't cook an egg - what can't you/the listener cook? Ask the listener how to cook and egg.
- Types of links: Setting up a feature/Interview. We have interviewed world famous artists and bands in the past such as The Wombats (PLEASE SPEAK TO A MEMBER OF THE EXEC TEAM TO ARRANGE THIS). Forward progression - signposting what is coming up on the station is important.
- Short 'power links/intros' - Often done over the start of a song within the intro.
- Planning (P>R>E>P)
- Prepare
- Rehearse
- Edit
- Perform
- Finally, be creative and unique. Don't just be the next Greg James. Create a reason to listen. Talk up the music, tell us how it make you feel and INVOLVE THE LISTENER.
