Before You Write

  1. Gather Facts: 

    Start by finding out all the essential information about the event, focusing on the 5Ws: Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How. 

  2. Choose a Newsworthy Topic: 

    Select a current event that is unique, active, and impactful, especially for a local audience. 

  3. Organize Your Information: 

    Plan your story by organizing the answers to the 5 Ws, possibly using bullet points.

Writing the Article

  1. Craft a Catchy Headline: 

    Create an attention-grabbing headline that makes readers want to learn more. 

  2. Write a Strong Lead: 

    Write a strong opening paragraph that summarizes the story in a nutshell and answers the key questions (5 Ws) upfront. 

  3. Use the Inverted Pyramid Style: 

    Present the most crucial information first, with less important details following in descending order of importance. 

  4. Keep it Clear and Concise: 

    Use short sentences and simple, straightforward language to ensure your article is easy to read and understand. 

  5. Use Active Voice: 

    Write in the active voice to create a more immediate and impactful story for the reader. 

  6. Incorporate Credible Quotes: 

    Use quotes from reliable sources to add credibility and provide perspective. 

  7. Guide the Reader: 

    Use subheadings and transition words to guide the reader through the article and help them navigate between different points. 

After You Write

  1. Become a Ruthless Editor: Edit your work thoroughly to cut out unnecessary words and ensure your sentences are short and effective. 
  2. Read Aloud: Read your report aloud to help determine its effectiveness and flow. 
  3. Check for Accuracy: Make sure your article is well-researched and based on reliable sources.
